Another demolition and rebuild, this time in Emsworth and featuring one of our favourite configurations of any house design – the upside-down house!

There are many advantages to this type of construction, but from a building point of view, it makes perfect sense to have smaller rooms on the ground floor supporting the floor and upper structure. The roof then, giving rise to bigger, open plan spaces.

The challenge with this construction method, was getting the roof trusses made.  Due to their size they had to made and assembled in the factory in Norwich, taken apart and re-assembled on site using a 75ton crane and then, carefully lifted into position…it was a long couple of days, but ultimately, worth it.  The stunning vaulted first floor with the giant trusses, is a real feature.

We fitted herringbone parquet on the first floor and commissioned the kitchen, from our own joinery to the Architect’s design.

On the ground floor we laid a polished concrete, designed and built the staircase from the designer’s concept, using oak and micro cement finishes. Bespoke ballustrades that match the balcony complete the look.  Micro cement also features in the en-suite providing a seamless transition between wall and floor.

Externally, the whole thing is clad in Shou Sugi Ban; a traditional technique used to burn the Douglas Fir Cladding.  This amazing product is first charred, wire brushed and oiled.  A hand-crafted technique that gives longevity and beauty to the whole exterior.  Atop, we have a super insulated warm roof with hidden gutters and zinc standing seam finishes.

Outside, we completed hard and soft landscaping duties with a garden office/gymnasium to match the main building.
